For many years one of the highlights of the summer in the Lake District is a visit to see one of the horse races in the beautiful village of Cartmel where racing dates back to 1856. Cartmel Races are now a fixture in the Lakes summer season of must go to events for locals and visitors.
Early racing by monks from the nearby Abbey have have taken place before this and early meetings were on the flat until a switch to the jumps which was better suited to the local farming and hunting community. Now owned and run by the Holker Estate who own the land and have a rich local history through the Cavendish family, more information on the history of the course can be found here http://cartmel-racecourse.co.uk/racecourse-history/
The dates for this year are below so get booked in if there are any tickets left as it is always a grand day out.
