Cartmel Races

For many years one of the highlights of the summer in the Lake District is a visit to see one of the horse races in the beautiful village of Cartmel where racing dates back to 1856. Cartmel Races are now a fixture in the Lakes summer season of must go to events for locals and visitors.

Early racing by monks from the nearby Abbey have have taken place before this and early meetings were on the flat until a switch to the jumps which was better suited to the local farming and hunting community. Now owned and run by the Holker Estate who own the land and have a rich local history through the Cavendish family, more information on the history of the course can be found here http://cartmel-racecourse.co.uk/racecourse-history/

A trip to the Races is always a very social affair with many people setting up camp with groups of friends and family, so it easy to image how great the atmosphere is going to be. On race day the village of Cartmel is always very busy and the party lasts long into the evening.
Race days now often include live music in the evening and this years headliners on June 29th are Boyzone.
